Since last summer the Kremlin’s forces have bombarded Bakhmut, a city that Moscow sees as critical to achieving Mr. Putin’s objective of capturing all of Donbas, which includes Donetsk and the neighboring Luhansk region.

To the north of Bakhmut, Russian troops advanced towards the town of Bilohorivka, just inside the Luhansk region, and shelled several settlements in the direction of Kupiansk and Lyman, the Ukrainian military said.
